Tassie doesn’t close down in winter - it transforms

There’s a common belief that when winter arrives, Tasmania’s walking season ends. The boots are packed away, the trails go quiet, and the wild places wait for summer’s return.

The first two are true - the tracks do fall silent, and the crowds vanish. But the idea that there’s nowhere left to walk? That’s the misconception.

Because winter in Tasmania doesn’t mean the end of adventure - it marks the beginning of a deeper, more elemental kind of journey.

Why walk in winter?

The iconic trails are still there, waiting. Only now, they feel different. Wilder. More intimate. You might find yourself snowshoeing across alpine plains in the Walls of Jerusalem, tracing the spine of the Overland Track under swirling mist, or walking the quiet coastlines of Maria Island while wombats graze nearby and the beaches lie completely still.

There’s no rush of foot traffic, no background chatter, no manufactured warmth. This is Tasmania raw and real - crisp air, dripping forests, frozen creeks, and the steady crunch of your boots as you move through landscapes that feel unchanged by time.

What to expect on the trail

At the end of each day, you arrive at camp - not a lodge, not a hut, but a remote campsite nestled into the wild. Our team sets it up, your gear is dry, the meals are hot, and your experienced guides are there every step of the way - not just keeping you safe, but helping you see what others miss.

These are not the softened comforts of a European winter walk, and we reckon the scenery is better! There’s no mulled wine stop. No cable car shortcut. This is World Heritage wilderness - snow in the forests, peaks that appear between clouds - and it’s right here in Australia.

Wild, not watered down

The challenge is part of the reward. You’ll get wet. You’ll get cold. And in those moments, you’ll feel more alive than you have in months. It’s the kind of experience that resets your perspective. That strips everything back. That reminds you how good it feels to be truly present, truly moving, truly out there.

And while the trail might be quiet, you’re never alone. Our guides are the difference - local, skilled, passionate, and endlessly prepared. They read the landscape, adjust to the weather, teach, support, and share the stories of the places you pass through. With them, you’re part of something bigger - not just a walk, but a wild, shared journey.

Our difference - more than just guiding

Our winter treks are led by professionals who know how to walk safely in changing alpine conditions, who understand the nuances of Tasmania’s wilderness, and who know how to create warm, welcoming camps no matter what the skies bring.

We supply all the gear, from snowshoes to quality tents. We cook hearty, nourishing meals. We move with the rhythm of the landscape - not racing to a finish line, but immersing ourselves in the experience.

This is not a holiday. It’s a winter journey through some of the most stunning and ancient landscapes in the world - and you’ll feel every part of it.

Ready to go?

So no - Tasmania doesn’t close down in winter. It simply opens up to those who are ready for something more.

If you’re the kind of traveller who prefers remote over routine, wild over easy, and depth over comfort - then winter is your season, and this is your time to walk.
